When Land Reform is not Reform
- This is part of a series:
- Parallels between Falangists and US Fascists
EMAD Leaders, Gullible Followers
The Falangists were like other Fascists in that the leaders were Exploitive, Manipulative, Amoral and Deceptive (EMAD), and their followers were either similar or Authoritarian types. In order to explain Fascism in General I've been comparing the plank of Falange to other Fascists including modern ones.
Sounding like Any Other Political Party
The 26 point Falange party plank included things that sounded like the kind of thing any political party or revolutionary party might embrace, as did that of the Nazis or Mussolini's Fascists. Some of this was to gaslight their followers and get them to abandon other movements and join theirs. But Some of the program, indeed sounded like what any party would promote. During the 30s the vast masses were concerned with employment, eating, health-care and survival. Anyone trying to get elected had to have a program for dealing with these things.
Fascism is a Response to Capitalism's Failure
Moreover freebooting capitalism had failed massively, so very few people were willing to defend capitalism. Fascism was a response to failure, and people who preferred to take advantage of failure. Fascism posed as a third way, between capitalism and socialism. On the stump or while fighting, they had slogans that articulated an ideal future state.
The Fascist Twist
But every time there was a fascist twist which turned the meaning of what they were doing from what outsiders might understand, and even support, to something dark and twisted. This was the case with their version of syndicalism:Falangist Version of Land Reform
The Falangist version of Land Reform was enumerated in plank items 17-22 as follows:
- D. Land Reforms
- 17. Demand to raise the standards of the countryside through reforms.
- 18. Assuring a minimum remuneration to all agricultural producers
- Restore renumerations “paid to the cities for intellectual and commercial services.”
- Using a “national system of agricultural credit which will lend money to farmers at low interest against the guarantee of their property and crops”
- while “redeeming them from usury and local tyrants
- Farmer and shepherd education in improved land use
- Providing Land use and Marketing support
- Tariff protections
- Reclamation and land redistribution
