We won the house. That means our Democracy is not yet dead. But it is still endangered as illustrated by what Donald Trump did yesterday.
Trump ordered Jeff Sessions to resign, and he resigned, which means that Trump fired Sessions. He put Matt Whitaker in Sessions place. Matt Whitaker is claimed to be taking over the Mueller investigation, though it is not certain that Trump can put Whitaker in place without confirmation hearings. The White House will argue that “Sessions resigned,” lawyers for the rest of us will argue he was fired. Given the court we have right now. The White House will get away with putting Matt Whitaker in charge of Mueller even though he too should recuse himself from the Mueller investigation. As Schumer notes:
“Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr. Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general.” [Schumer]
But we don't have a normal President. We have a man who admires Al Capone, Richard Nixon and has been in bed with one kind or another of the mob since he was out of diapers. It is time to take to the streets in protest.
Hobbling the Mueller investigation is a red line in our Democracy. Please protest!
There is one right now!
